Books as gifts for the holidays? Or books for yourself on these cold-I-don’t-wanna-go-outside days? The answer is a no-brainer: yes.

I know. Ninety percent of the joy of shopping at the How Novel Story Lorry is the ambiance; the fact that you were walking down the street and had a chance encounter with a quaint, wildly painted camper full of books, and poked your nose around to find a literary treasure you didn’t realize you needed.

Unfortunately, winter and the Story Lorry don’t mix. I’ve written about this anecdote before: the day the Story Lorry was warm enough to melt the snow off people’s boots, but the air-current under the floor caused the snowmelt to freeze almost immediately, and customers had to ice-skate between bookshelves. Not safe.

So instead of dragging the Lorry out of storage, I’ve spent the last week updating the Story Lorry’s eBay site. Click here to peruse our selection, and if you’re local and want overnight delivery, just contact me on this website or email me at hownovelbooksandart@gmail.com with the book you’re interested in, and I’ll have it to you the next day!

In the meantime, enjoy these recommendations!

Antique Charles Dickens: beautiful classic tales to read, and beautiful on your shelf.

Beginners: perfect for the New Year, because you are never too old to try something new.

The Latte Rebellion: a novel for teens/young adults who are interested in social justice, and I would pair with a gift card for a favorite local coffee shop!

Manslaughter Park: for the person who has read Jane Austin’s Mansfield Park, but craves a murderous twist! I speak from personal experience: this is a lovely, cozy-up-and-read book.

Momoir: for any new or soon-to-be mother. Everyone you meet oohs and aahs over your little bundle, and rightfully so (they are so cute!) but it’s not an easy gig, and this book is a cathartic partner with which to commiserate the ups and downs or new parenthood.
